In January 2025 Owens Corning announced that they have discontinued production of their three tab Supreme line of shingles in our area!
For many years now, the architectural or dimensional shingles have been the standard for homeowners replacing their roofs, but prior to the 1980’s three tabbed shingles took the lead. Called “3 tab” for the literal design of three individual tabs per shingle, these were the option of choice for nearly every residential roof. As technology has advanced and environmental concerns over production methods and materials have influenced shingle manufacturing, more durable architectural style shingles became more prevalent. The market tells suppliers what to make, and this announcement by Owens Corning confirms it: customers no longer prefer the three tabbed shingle.
This announcement is likely to be mirrored by other manufacturers over time, and can have lasting implications for homeowners and investors alike.
What does this mean for you?
1. More difficulty with repairs:
If you own a roof that has three tabbed shingles – you may have trouble finding materials for a repair. Simply put – if they stop making the shingles, you will not have access to matching materials if you need a roof repair. That could mean that even minor repairs – a limb falls from a tree and punctures a small area, or a pest chews through shingles trying to gain access – would not be repairable with the same look you have now!
You may be forced to choose between a full roof replacement or mismatch. Your HOA may have some input on this as well!
If you are already aware of minor damages, now may be your last chance to take care of repairs while existing stock levels allow!
2. Insurance implications:
Check with your insurance carrier for information on what the lack of materials may mean for any future claims. It is critical that you know what to expect BEFORE you are in the middle of a difficult situation!
A quality roofing company brings more to the table than just a quality installation – education and back end office support can go a long way in helping you through a claim. We can provide you with the tools and verbiage to discuss the claim with your adjuster, as well as what to ask your agent to include in your policy!
We are not adjusters, and are not agents, but we do have involvement on claims and see first hand the struggle when a homeowner or investor finds out that their coverage is not quite what they expected!
As a word of warning – most policies have specific language about their responsibility if roof damage is present and replacement materials are not available. Be sure you know EXACTLY what your policy covers.
3. Changes in curb appeal:
For many of us, the curb appeal of our house when we bought it played a large part in the decision to buy. That being said, we have grown accustomed to that look and well…change is hard!
There is a very noticeable difference in the look of dimensional shingles when compared to the 3 tab version in the same color. Shadow lines and color variations can vary from slight to wild!
If you are after a more subtle appearance, you may want to check out the luxury lines for more options. For example, several manufacturers have upgraded shingles that mimic the look of slate or wood shake.
4. New levels of durability:
If the look of the architectural shingle is more your style but you want to get the longest lasting option – there are newer formulas that offer hail resistance and can withstand high winds, brutal elements, and even significant hail events without loss of function!
It is important to know the difference between wind ratings which may be based on a certain number of fasteners per shingle, or hail ratings that differ between class 3 and class 4. A reputable roofer will be able to not only explain those differences but offer manufacturers details and not expect you to “take their word” for it.
If sustainability is a concern – look for a roofing company that recycles the old shingles and gives new life to old materials! Cervices has taken a recycling pledge.
If you are ready to replace your three tabbed roof and need some help with color and material selection – there are several tools that can help.
